The 4 Cs of Diamonds
Cut
Not only does the cut mean the shape of the Diamond, but also the proportions of how the Diamond is cut.
Clarity
The clarity of a diamond is decided by the existence, or absence, of visible flaws. The clarity levels begin with Flawless (FL & IF), then Very, Very Slight (VVS1 & 2), then Very Slight (VS1 & 2), then Slightly Included (SI1 & 2), and Included (I1, 2 & 3)
Color
With the exception of colored diamonds, the most valuable diamonds are those with the least amount of color-or colorless. The scale for the color of a diamond starts at D-F (colorless), G-J (near colorless), K-M (faint yellow), to Z (light yellow). Completely colorless diamonds are rare.
The fancy natural colored diamonds for formed with traces of other minerals. The range of these rare and beautiful diamonds are from blue, bright yellow, red, brown, pale green, pink and violet purple. The fancy natural colored diamonds are very rare and highly desirable.
Carat Weight
The size of a diamond is not measured by the dimensions of the stone, but by the weight of the stone.
At The Gem Smith, we prefer the Cut of the Diamond first, second, the Color, then Clarity and Carat Weight. If the Cut of the diamond is bad, the color and clarity aren’t going to matter. At The Gem Smith we prefer a D-H color and SI1-2 clarity. We can provide any size, clarity and color that you prefer and that fits into your price range.
